She is a former Premier of Nunavut and an important figure in Inuit politics.

The flag of Nunavut is yellow and white, divided vertically, with a red inukshuk in the center and a blue star in the upper right corner.
The inukshuk represents Inuit culture, and the star symbolizes the leadership of Elders.
